Our Favorite Destinations: Mattapoisett

8 Miles West Southwest of Kingman Yacht Center, Mattapoisett provides a bit of Nantucket feel on Buzzards Bay, with its narrow streets, white picket fences, beautiful gardens and weathered shingled homes.  This little town boasts a large, natural harbor and features a series of grand stone wharves dating back to the 1800s, with pumpout, visitor tie-up and a dinghy dock.  The town maintains a very well-done web page for visiting boater information.

Mattapoisett is peppered with Victorian ship captains’ homes and is centered on a well-groomed waterfront park where concerts, dances and other events are held during summer. Just across the street from the harbor is the Inn at Shipyard Park for a drink or some good food. A short walk will bring you to the commercial center of town, home to The Walrus & Captain, a great spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner, also Tastebuds restaurant and a variety of shops.

A perfect day trip from Red Brook Harbor, you should plan to spend a few hours and discover why “Mattapoisett” means “the resting place” in the language of the Wampanoag Indians.
