Please DO NOT remove the proposed aids to navigation. These aids are not just tools, but they are vital for safety. They serve as visual ‘checks and balances' to the electronic navigation for both the recreational and the professional mariner. Redundancy in navigation resources is essential, and these aids serve as a backup to each system, providing immediate visual orientation for the mariner through shape, color, light, and sound (if equipped). Keep these buoys, day beacons, and lights in place for safer inland and coastal navigation, day or night.
I am especially concerned with the potential loss of buoys ... (insert your concerns here). Their removal will result in more vessels going aground, with potential catastrophic damage to vessels and injury to crews.
Thank you,

Only 2 more weeks to submit your comments! Public comment period ends on 6/13/25.The US Coast Guard is proposing removal of several buoys in Cape coastal waters, prompting concerns that eliminating the buoys would threaten public safety.
The Coast Guard’s Coastal Buoy Modernization Initiative is meant to “right size" locations of buoys along 2,000 miles of coastline from Maine to northern New Jersey, “actively adjusting aids to work best and most sustainably given today's navigation tools and methods.” The USCG thinks the reduced number of buoys is justifiable since most mariners today rely on chartplotters, electronic charts and smartphone apps rather than taking multiple fixes on landmarks and navigational aids, Buoys considered for removal in our area are shown on the map.
Concerned mariners say that the buoys are still relevant to mariners, likening them to highway exit signs, visual signs of locations should mariners’ electronics fail, or they become disoriented in the fog.
The Coast Guard is now accepting your written responses to this proposal. Refer to Project No. 01-25-015. E-mail can be sent to: [email protected]. Your input would be very helpful and much appreciated by those of us who rely upon visual navigation aids.
