Paul Gately’s article in the Aug. 11 edition of the Bourne Courier might, more correctly, have been headlined: “Bass-Ackwards Race Celebrates Bourne’s Resources.”
For the past 13 years, the BassAckwards Race and Beach Party have been efforts to bring together people with a love of the water for a day of fun and enjoyment of our bay and beaches. Sailors have participated in a unique race format that allows novice racers to compete on an equal footing with experienced crews, with approximately 50 boats and 250 crews racing each year. Race crews have then gathered with power boaters, kayakers, swimmers and sun worshippers for an afternoon on the beach, with live music from a floating stage provided by the race organizers.
In that entire 13-year period, with tens of thousands of participants, I am not aware of a single arrest, serious accident or injury related to the race or party on Bassetts Island....
