Racing under light and variable winds, and competing against a field of 43 other boats, including three previous race winners, Seannine pulled off off a photo finish against the number two racer, Sleigh Ride. In fact, less than two minutes separated the first five boats to finish, and 10 boats crossed the line within ten minutes of the winner!
The race featured a variety of boats, ranging from 19-foot daysailers to 50+ foot racing boats, all handicapped with a staggered start to potentially cross the finish line at the same time. First one across the finish line wins. Experience ranged widely as well, from first-time racer to finely-tuned crews who race together every week.
The 13th Annual BassAckwards Race was the centerpiece of a weekend that featured a Friday evening party for 300 of the race captains, crew and invited guests, and a live band performing on Bassetts Island Saturday afternoon after the race. Spectacular weather and good music drew an estimated 800 boats to the beach at the island, and as many as 4,000 people enjoyed the afternoon with no reported incidents or issues.
The event's presenter, Kingman Yacht Center, provided portable toilets at the beach, coordinated with state, local and federal law enforcement to oversee all of the on-water activities, worked with Bourne Community Boating to provide transportation to and from the island, and had a crew of five on the beach at daybreak Sunday to clean up the entire public beach portion of the island.
A portion of the race proceeds support The Coalition for Buzzards Bay and Bourne Community Boating.
Special thanks go out the the Old Sigh Race Series and Buzzards Sailing School for running the race; to the Kingman Yacht Club staff, members and officers for organizing, coordinating and moving huge numbers of people safely and efficiently; and to the race sponsors for their support:
Pusser's Navy Rum, Harpoon Brewery, Vineyard Vines, Harbortown Wines of New Zealand, The Chart Room, Seaside Wines and Spirits, and the Quahog Republic.
