If you plan to anchor your boat during a hurricane, we suggest that you refer to the recommendations detailed in Chapman's Piloting, as summarized below:
•At least three (3) anchors
•Adequate chain, line and chafing gear to rig
•Adequate anchor rope and chain: a hurricane mooring system (preferably heavy leather or rubber hose chafing gear) minimum of 100' of rope per anchor (check for wear or rotten ends where rope fastens to anchor chain), and 15' of chain per anchor with appropriate shackles.
The following recommendations do not guarantee that your boat will escape damage, but will improve the potential for minimizing damage:
•Secure all on-deck equipment such as antennas, fenders, dodgers, bimini tops, hooks, rafts, ladders, fishing gear, chairs, etc.
•Remove or lash down sails, particularly roller furled genoas
•Secure mooring lines and protect with adequate chafing gear
•Secure the mooring with additional pennants
•Stow dinghies ashore
